NATIONAL HEALTH INSURANCE

An amendment to the Social Security Act in 2000 established a National Health Insurance Scheme as part of the Health Sector Reform process.

The launching of the project officially established NHI as a purchaser of health services in 2001.

The NHI Scheme is a financing and purchasing mechanism for primary care-level health services from both private and public providers. It is financed with government revenues, and its governance falls under the Social Security Board.

Payment is linked to performance based on pre-established indicators and well-defined standards and treatment protocols, including for non-communicable diseases.

OFFICIAL CHARITIES FUND

The Official Charities Fund (OCF) is a funding mechanism of the Government of Belize used to financially support programs of the Government, civil society organizations and charities that work on social issues in Belizean communities. Some of these issues include homelessness, domestic violence, child protection, mental health, and elderly support, among others.

An increase in resources to the OCF through the profits from Boledo will result in more opportunities to address many of the social ills in the country.
